Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a widespread pain syndrome characterized by persistent pain on both left and right side of the body and above and below the waist. In the past, for a definitive diagnosis 11 of 18 tender points on the body were identified.
            Today the diagnosis is more nuanced.  The greater the number of painful areas, the greater the likelihood of fibromyalgia.  The greater the number of varied symptoms and their severity, the greater the likelihood of fibromyalgia.  If sleeping disorders, fatigue, mental clarity and/or emotional issues are also present, fibromyalgia is a likely diagnosis.  Fibromyalgia can also present with headaches, joint pains, restless legs, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.

              But there are no definitive laboratory tests.  In part it is a diagnosis of exclusion…ruling out other diagnoses.
